3 Hens & A Chick

The original “3 Hens & A Chick” (four transplants from “off”) met in a class called “Chocolate Club” at a quilt shop called “Quilters Combo.” As they talked and shared their common ground – QUILTING – they became friends. Not long after that they heard that the quilt shop was going to close. So, they talked about how neat it would be to open their very own quilt shop in the Athens area. Their dream came true when they opened “3 Hens & A Chick Quilt Shop” on March 1, 2014.  (Original Chicks are L-R: Vicki Kellogg, Elizabeth Gordon, Anne Johnson, Andrea Karwoski)

Still going strong and entering our 6th year, this year we said goodbye to Vicki as she retired to enjoy her newly remodeled quilting room.  We welcomed one new owner, Jana, into the Coop. A great addition, she brings her love of people and quilting.

See you at The Hen House!!

Jana Killen:

Hometown:  Hamilton AL.  After growing up on the Buttahatchee River, I graduated in 1982 from UNA in Florence with a B.S. degree in Office Administration.  Worked in Huntsville for various government contractors for 27 years.  I ended that career as the Executive Administrative Assistant to the CEO of a major Aviation Company in Huntsville. An aerospace engineering expert, my husband is Dr. Albert Killen and is an MSU and MIT graduate (he’s smart, very smart).  We live in Minor Hill, Tennessee in the middle of God’s beautiful creation of hills and streams.  Somewhat new to the quilting world, I love, love, love how sewing and quilting brings women (and a few men) together!  From patchwork quilts to fabric bowls, tote bags to quilts of valor, there’s always something happening you’ll want to get involved with at “3 Hens & A Chick.”  So, come take a class or just hang out with us at The Hen House!

Carol Alley:

Home Town: El Paso, TX.  We moved to Alabama in 1971 with the Army. In 1975 my husband left the military and we moved back to Huntsville to make it our home. After retirement, we sold our home in Huntsville and moved to Lauderdale County. I am relatively new to quilting but have sewed for many years. In 2014 I was introduced to 3 Hens and a Chick Quilt Shop by a friend who asked me to take a class with her. Loved the “Hens & Chick” and the Quilt Shop – I was hooked!! Thank you ladies for asking me to be a part of this wonderful adventure.

Cheryl Johnson:

Hometown: Mt. Vernon IL.  I was born and raised in Southern Illinois where I lived until my husband joined the Navy in 1987. During our tour in Port Orchard, I met my best friend Lisa and she introduced me to quilting in 1988. I have had a passion for quilting ever since!  I always say “every quilt is a learning quilt” and I have learned a lot since I joined the shop in 2017. Our customers have so much wisdom and a willingness to share,  I truly feel blessed everyday.  With the addition of Jana, our new Chick, I have been promoted to Hen status and couldn’t be happier. Being part owner of a quilt shop has been very exciting and rewarding.  Can’t ask for a better “job”.

Elizabeth Gordon:

Hometown: Alexandria VA.  Been in Athens, Alabama 18 years. I was born and raised in Alexandria, Va. I lived in Southern California for about 23 years and worked for Rockwell/Boeing. My husband and I moved to Athens in 2000 to be close to family. In 2009 I was back in California visiting a close friend and she helped me make my first quit. It was an Elanor Burns Log Cabin Quilt. I gave the quilt to my sister for a Christmas present. I’ve been hooked ever since. AND now , “Oh my gosh” I’m part owner of a quilt shop. I’m having fun and still learning quilting techniques.
